Former AIG Claims Director Brings Bad Faith and Litigation Strategy Capability

(June 24, 2014, New York, NY) — Kaufman Dolowich &Voluck LLP (KD), a leading national law firm, today announced that J. Robert MacAneney has joined the firm as a partner in its New York City office. MacAneney has more than 20 years of experience in all aspects of insurance coverage law on both the corporate and law firm side.

MacAneney’s practice will focus on coverage disputes and litigation matters involving professional errors and omissions, directors and officers, fidelity, miscellaneous professional liability and employment practices liability.

MacAneney comes to Kaufman Dolowich & Voluck from American International Group (AIG, New York, NY), where he managed a large caseload of some of their highest profile coverage and bad faith lawsuits for the Financial Lines coverage group. At AIG, he oversaw all litigation strategies and participated in all settlement discussions, mediations, arbitrations and trials. Prior to that, MacAneney managed the Professional Liability Claims department for RLI Insurance Company (New York, NY). He has also handled professional liability defense and general commercial litigation at leading law firms in New York City.

“Having spent more than a decade working for insurance companies has given me insight into what their unique needs are, what demands are placed on the adjusters and what is expected from a legal perspective to satisfy their needs on a timely and professional basis,” said Mr. MacAneney. “Having first worked in private practice before joining insurance firms, I understand the realities of both worlds and can provide a viewpoint and level of service that the insurance industry requires. I look forward to building a multi-faceted coverage litigation practice grounded in the knowledge and experience I have attained from the corporate and legal worlds.”

“Rob is a preeminent insurance bad faith litigator who will enhance our national presence in this field, which has always been a core strength of the firm,” said Ivan J. Dolowich, co-managing partner of KD. “His extensive experience in handling insurance coverage disputes, bad faith litigation and complex cases – combined with his carrier experience – will serve as a tremendous asset to our clients. We are thrilled he will be joining our very talented national coverage team.”

MacAneney earned his B.A. from Brown University and his J.D. from New York Law School. He is admitted to practice in New York and Connecticut and the United States Supreme Court, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS).

“Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with and get to know many of the insurance partners at KD and so I am joining a firm where many of my colleagues are also my friends,” said MacAneney. “I feel that over the years we have grown together and I am impressed not only with their professionalism but their character. There is a great comfort level working along side colleagues you have known for many years and trust implicitly and I look forward to getting to know the rest of KD in the months and years ahead.”
